SSP Secondary Cafeteria is Being Renamed in the Honor of a Longtime South St. Paul Education Advocate

The South St. Paul Educational Foundation is proud to announce the naming of the SSP Secondary Cafeteria as The David R. Metzen Scholarship Hall.

David R. Metzen has a long history with South St. Paul Schools. Dave graduated from South St. Paul High School in 1960.  He received his degrees at the University of Minnesota.  He returned to South St. Paul as a Principal and was the Superintendent from 1982 to 2000.

During Dave’s tenure, he expanded the classroom experience to accommodate different learning styles by adding The Alternative Learning Center, The International Baccalaureate Programme, and a partnership with the Dakota County Technical College. He also believed a person’s success depended on the support of family, teachers, coaches, mentors – a whole community.

Under his leadership, The South St. Paul Educational Foundation was established.  This Foundation has funded education initiatives in classrooms and provided a broad scholarship program to help students achieve their goals.  It not only underlines the importance of continued education in all forms, but also gives the community an opportunity to help.

In recognition of Dr. Metzen’s leadership and love for the South Saint Paul community and its schools, the SSP Educational Foundation will host an Open House October 13th from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at SSP Secondary (700- 2nd Street North). A short program will take place at 7:00 pm to celebrate the new ‘David R. Metzen Scholarship Hall’.
