District seeks input from families of current, future and former students in upcoming telephone survey
Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018 - What courses and experiences do students need to be successful in a global world? How should South St. Paul Public Schools (SSPPS) use its limited resources to maximize student learning? What kinds of programs and offerings are students and parents looking for in their local schools?
To answer these and other strategic planning questions, SSPPS annually reviews various data sources to inform future strategic decisions. Data may come in the form of best practice research around instructional strategies or brain development, from focus groups and study teams, or from casual conversations with students, staff and families. Periodically, South St. Paul Public Schools (SSPPS) also conducts surveys and polls in an effort to assess constituent attitudes and beliefs about the operation of the school district.
“We are at a point in our strategic planning where we need to check-in with our families and see how we can enhance our programs and services to better serve students,” said Superintendent Dave Webb. “As we look at future program and budget decisions facing the district, we recognize that hearing from our families is critical to our success. South St. Paul families are our customers and we need to be able to balance what research says is best for student learning with the interests and desires of our students and families.”
Later this month, SSPPS will be surveying families of current, future and former students to help identify what the district is doing well and what it could be doing better to serve the diverse needs of its students.
The district has contracted with the Morris Leatherman Company, a national survey research company located in Minneapolis, to conduct a scientific, random-sample survey. Respondents will be asked a number of questions about their current attitudes and satisfaction of SSPPS, awareness and satisfaction of current academic program offerings, reactions to possible new program offerings, important factors in school choice decisions, and preferred communication methods. Data from the survey will help inform future decisions and efforts around strategic planning, marketing, programming, staffing, and budgeting.
The survey will be conducted via telephone during November and will seek input from a representative sample of the district’s preschool and school age families. Initial results from the survey are expected in December, with a planned presentation to administration and the School Board in December or January.
