Kaposia Education Center’s efforts to build a more caring and supportive school community benefit from $1,000 award from Old National Bank
Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019 — Orange was the color of the day as students and staff at Kaposia Education Center gathered for a special assembly this afternoon in honor of Unity Day, a national effort of schools across the county to come together and share the message that no child should ever experience bullying.
“At Kaposia we believe that for students to learn they need to feel welcome and supported in our school,” said Principal Terry Bretoi. “Our staff and students work hard throughout the year to create activities and opportunities that help build that caring community and foster a climate that encourages kindness and discourages bullying.”
But this year’s bullying prevention assembly had an extra surprise in store, an oversized $1,000 check for the school to use to build on these efforts. Kaposia received the funds as a regional winner of an online contest sponsored by Old National Bank.
Old National Bank (ONB) recently completed its fifth annual Tools for Schools grant promotion, a company-wide campaign created to help get the school year started right for countless students in need in local communities. The Tools for Schools grant promotion was conducted during the month of September. Visitors were encouraged to vote for a school to receive a Tools for Schools grant via ONB’s Facebook page. A voting page was created for each of Old National’s regions throughout Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, with participating school districts pre-populated to make the voting collection easy. Nearly 112,000 votes were cast for about 925 schools in five different states. Grants of $1,000 were awarded to the schools with the most votes in each region. As the Minnesota winner, representatives from ONB joined Kaposia students and staff at the Oct. 23 assembly to present the award.
“We are so excited about this grant for our students and school and we are honored to partner with Old National in this effort,” Bretoi said. “These dollars will go a long way in helping us build on our efforts to promote kindness, respect and a positive school climate at Kaposia for everyone.”
Bretoi said that they plan to use part of the grant to help replenish “calming bins” at Kaposia. The bins, which are located in each learning space around the school, are a behavioral strategy used at Kaposia as part of its Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program. They are filled with fidgets, timers, calming pieces, and other tools that can help students who are agitated or anxious. Students are taught how to breathe, regain composure and regulate their voices and bodies at a calming station while using the calming pieces. According to Bretoi, the items often get lost, broken or misplaced over time and need to be replaced. Additionally, grant money will be used to provide Kaposia t-shirts for all students as part of their school pride efforts.
