SSPPS NAAPID Celebrations
National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) is celebrated each year, during Black History Month, on the second Monday in February. NAAPID is centered on both Black history and culture and parent involvement. This year, we celebrated the power of community and the positive impact of parental engagement with all of our SSPPS families.
Kaposia Education Center
At Kaposia, families came for refreshments and stories with their students. Books on Black history and culture were available for families to read together while they enjoyed their breakfast.
Lincoln Center
At Lincoln Center, families enjoyed breakfast and read books featuring Black characters and culture. After, 2nd and 3rd grade classes sang the school song of January "Lean on Me." Followed by a few 5th grade students reading letters they wrote to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
SSP Middle School
Middle school families gathered in the auditorium for a guest speaker from Goal Getters Academy. He spoke about the mentorship program SSP Middle School has with the nonprofit, which empowers at-risk students to overcome challenges and establish themselves as thinkers and leaders. Afterward, the high school choir performed the song "Lift Every Voice and Sing." The program finished with refreshments and time to socialize.
SSP High School
At the high school, families came for refreshments and to hear from students and guests. First students in the Black Pride Organization Affinity Group help a panel titled "Being Leaders in SSPPS." The panel was followed by two guest speakers: Maia Maiden from The Ordway "Hip Hop & STEM" and Emanuell Williams from the MN Department of Health "INSPIRE Program." Students were also asked to color pages illustrating things from Black culture or featuring famous Black Americans. The finished coloring sheets will be displayed in the school.
