School Counseling Program

The role of the school counselor is to help every student thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.  In partnership with students, staff, family, and other members of the community, the school counselor strives to prepare students to become effective learners, achieve success in school, live successful and rewarding lives, and develop into contributing members of our society. The goal is that each and every student builds the skills they need to be successful in the classroom and beyond.

Finding Students that Need Support

When a student needs school counselor support they can be referred in a number of ways. One of the most common is from a teacher or staff member noticing a change in a student’s behavior, grades, or attendance. The BARR Program (Building Assets, Reducing Risks) meetings are an opportunity to identify students who may need additional support. At BARR meetings, staff members discuss the needs of individual students and discuss ways they can help them, which may lead to a counselor referral. Families can reach out to the school and request a meeting for their student and students can also self-refer.
