Submitting Documents

Once you have completed your online enrollment application, the documents below need to be submitted before your student's enrollment will be processed. Use any of the three methods to submit your documents. When emailing, include the student's name in the subject line.

OPEN ENROLLMENT

Thank you for choosing South St. Paul Public Schools! Families may apply for open enrollment at any time. South St. Paul Public Schools will notify families in writing within 90 days if the application has been accepted or denied.

Early Childhood & Elementary (PreK–Grade 5)

Applications are accepted year-round.
Applications are processed on a rolling basis throughout the school year.
Families will be notified once applications are reviewed.

Secondary (Grades 6–12)

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until September 15.
After September 15, applications are reviewed according to trimester start dates.
Families are notified at least two weeks before the trimester begins, and students may start on the first day of that trimester. Applications received within two weeks of the trimester starting will be reviewed for a start date of the following trimester.

Complete the Statewide Enrollment Options Form and return to the SSP Enrollment Center at the address above or email to enrollsspps@sspps.org.

An application must be completed for each student. The parent/guardian address section must contain an address in the state of Minnesota.

Please note the information contained within Policy 509 concerning admission. Open Enrollment legislation requires you to discuss your reason(s) for leaving with an assigned staff person in the school your student is currently attending. Usually this is with a counselor or principal.

Attendance Requirement for Open Enrollment

According to Minnesota law (Minn. Stat. Sec. 124D.03, Subd. 12), open enrollment may be ended if a student is habitually truant. This means that if a student has too many unexcused absences, the district is required to revoke their open enrollment status. Regular attendance is essential for learning and success. If your family is facing challenges with attendance, please reach out—we are here to support you and connect you with resources to help your child attend school consistently.

Resident District Notification

Once your application has been reviewed, you will be notified on your open enrolled status by building staff.

FORMS

INTRADISTRICT TRANSFER

South St. Paul students are assigned to an elementary school based on established attendance boundaries. The intradistrict transfer process for elementary schools provides the opportunity for families to request to have students attend a school other than the one assigned by attendance boundaries.

If your request is approved:

Transportation: transportation arrangements are the responsibility of the parent/guardian. Transportation will not be provided by the district if your child is approved to attend an elementary school outside of your assigned attendance zone. If you have questions regarding transportation, please contact our Transportation Office at (651) 457-9472 or eryan@sspps.org.
Re-Application: It should not be necessary for you to reapply annually for a boundary transfer request during your children’s elementary years. However, the District maintains the right to require reapplication if enrollment growth makes it necessary. You will be notified if this occurs.

Apply for intradistrict transfer

If you wish to request a transfer of your child to another elementary school within South St. Paul Schools, please download the following form and submit completed form to either an elementary building Office or the District Office, 104 – 5th Avenue South, South St. Paul, MN 55075.

You will be expected to contact your school office in the future if your student(s) will not continue to attend the desired school you requested or you move from your current address.

HOMESCHOOL

Homeschool

Home schooling is an alternative option to public or traditional private school attendance. Public Online Learning is not home school. A parent may choose to home school their child(ren) at any time during the school year, however, the parent must register their intent to home school in the district in which they live within 15 days of withdrawing their child from public school.

Home school families in South St. Paul School District should receive a letter in August from the district that will assist them in submitting the necessary forms for the following school year. There are steps that need to be taken in order to register a home school within the school district:

Home School Initial Registration
This form is to be printed, completed by the parent and mailed or submitted electronically to resident school superintendents by October 1 of each year, or within 15 days of withdrawing a child from public school in order to home school.
Letter of Intent to Continue Home Schooling
This form is to be printed, completed by the parent and mailed or submitted electronically to resident school superintendents by October 1 of each year after the parent has provided the same district with an Initial Registration form.
Student Immunization Record
This form is to be printed, completed by the parent or health care provider and must be sent along with the Initial Registration form or Letter of Intent to Continue form. The Minnesota Department of Health provides helpful information regarding school immunization laws in Minnesota. The law does include home schools.

The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) has determined that home schools are private schools that provide their own curriculum, transcripts and diplomas. MDE does not vouch for or certify curriculum, transcripts or diplomas. South St. Paul School District cannot provide curriculum, transcripts or diplomas for home school students.

The State of Minnesota requires nationally norm-referenced standardized achievement examinations for home schooled students each year. Minnesota Statewide Testing Program through the University of Minnesota is one source that provides testing materials for home school educators in Minnesota.

ECFE/PRESCHOOL

ECFE is for all families in the South St. Paul School District with children from birth to kindergarten. Classes for our youngest learners and families take place at Kaposia Education Center (1225 1st Ave S, SSP).

Registration

Immunization Requirement

Minnesota requires all children entering child care, early childhood programs, and elementary or secondary schools (public or private), have up-to-date immunizations on file with the provider. Children enrolled in SSD 6 ECFE programs will be required to provide a copy of an immunization record for each child enrolled prior to the child attending the program.

The school district will follow up on every child enrolled as required by law. You may use the print out from your physician's office or download the student immunization form above to record your child's immunizations. You must bring your child's immunization record the first day of class. Any child who does not have up-to-date immunizations on the first day of class will not be allowed to attend.

School Census

If you have moved to our community, we want to ensure you receive information about early childhood screenings, preschool, and kindergarten registrations at the appropriate times. Please complete the school census form so the district can inform you of programs such as:
