Message From the Director
As the Director of Special Services, it is an honor and privilege to partner with students, families and school staff in our work together to ‘prepare each and every student for their next step.’
Our staff is highly qualified and appropriately licensed to service the diverse needs of all learners. Academic achievement based on individual student learning needs is supported through robust instructional materials delivered by qualified educators. These materials have been enhanced with the recent addition of new mathematics and work-based curriculum for our transition age learners in grades 9-12. We also recently expanded the use of an interactive, standards-based curriculum specifically designed for students with special needs in grades K-12. This includes both academic and social skills materials that are age-appropriate and engaging for students at all developmental levels. These are welcome additions as we continue to support learners through research –based curriculum and assistive technologies.
Programming is in place across the district to provide educational options that best meet student’s individual learning needs. Early Childhood Special Education programs partner with Community Preschool to provide inclusive classroom opportunities for our youngest learners at both elementary sites. Individual academic and social/emotional needs of learners are supported through a wide array of programs designed to deliver best-practice interventions and instruction specific to a learner’s disability. For those students in need of all day special education programming and specialized instruction, the district partners with Intermediate District #917 for a variety of educational services and supports.
In addition to programming and curriculum, our department has a strong commitment to providing all students with standards-based instruction. This includes a focus on standards based goals and objectives with access to core teaching in the Least Restrictive Environment. Special education services are delivered through a variety of models including but not limited to collaborative co-teaching, small groups and consultative based support.
A vital part of the education of all learners is the partnership opportunities we have to work together. The Special Education Advisory Committee is comprised of a group of parents, friends, family members, school staff interested in the promotion of student achievement and success. SEAC meetings dates are posted on our department webpage. Please consider joining these open meetings.
Special services will continue a focus on specialized instruction and innovative programming that meets student individual needs. As the district Special Services Director, I am dedicated to leading a department that is educationally and fiscally responsible with an ongoing commitment to ‘preparing each and every learner for their next step.’ Please feel free to contact me. Questions and comments are always welcome as we work together in partnership.
