Minnesota Student Survey
The Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) is a statewide survey designed to gather insights about the experiences, challenges, and behaviors of young people across Minnesota. It aims to understand the risks they face, the challenges they encounter, and what helps them make positive choices in their lives.
This survey provides comprehensive data on youth health and well-being at the state, county, and local levels. It is the only consistent data source that captures perspectives from diverse population groups statewide. Conducted every three years, the MSS is administered in regular public elementary and secondary schools, including charter schools, tribal schools, alternative learning centers, and juvenile correctional facilities. Students in grades 5, 8, 9, and 11 are invited to participate.
The survey collects information on a wide range of topics, including: school climate, bullying, out-of-school activities, healthy eating, emotional health, substance use, and connections with family, school, and community. For students in grades 9 and 11, the survey includes additional questions on topics such as violence and sexual activity. The survey emphasizes both protective factors—such as family, school, and community support—and risk factors that can impact youth development.
The MSS is anonymous, meaning no names or identifying information are collected, ensuring individual responses cannot be traced back to students. Participation is optional, and students may choose to decline through an opt-out form. Even if they choose to take the survey, they can skip any question they do not wish to answer.
Data from the MSS is used by school districts, local public health agencies, and community nonprofits to identify community needs and plan effective programs. State agencies also use the data to monitor trends, pinpoint areas requiring support, and inform funding decisions.

The public can access data from the Minnesota Student Survey for the years 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2022 through an online interactive report.
- What if I don’t want my child to participate?
Families can choose to opt out of the survey by completing an opt-out form. Additionally, if a student decides to participate, they may skip any question or choose not to answer specific questions.
- Can I preview the survey questions?
MDE policy does not allow districts to distribute survey questions directly to families. However, you can contact your child’s principal to schedule a time to preview the survey questions in person.
- When will my child take the survey?
Each school site posts its testing and assessment calendar on its website, which includes the dates for the Minnesota Student Survey.
