The early years of childhood form the basis of intelligence, personality, social behavior, and capacity to learn as an adult. The early years matter because hundreds of connections in the brain are being formed every second! These connections build the brain and impact learning, behavior, and health. Children who have Early Childhood/Preschool experiences enter kindergarten with improved school performance, higher math and language abilities; sharpened thinking/attention skills, stronger interactions with peers, and fewer behavior problems. 

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)

Early Childhood Family Education provides education and support for all parents; to provide the best possible environment for the healthy growth and development of their children through research-based instructional/learning strategies. 

  • Promotes Healthy Growth: Supports the physical, emotional, and cognitive development of young children, creating a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
  • Family Resources: Provides families with access to child development resources, empowering them to support their child’s growth at home.
  • Building Confidence: Focuses on developing classroom confidence and social skills to help children feel comfortable and ready to engage in learning experiences.

Our program also supports parents during early parenthood and adoption. Experienced professionals in child development are available for home visits. Get information and tips on your daily needs, as well as those of your baby. This is a free service for all families in the SSPPS District.

Preschool

We are committed to preparing your child for success by supporting their intellectual, physical, and social-emotional develop in a positive and nurturing environment. Our program is Four-Star Parent Aware rated and uses The Creative Curriculum, a developmentally-appropriate and play-based curriculum that nurtures the whole child. 

  • Foundations for Success: Lays the groundwork for academic, emotional, and social success by fostering early literacy, numeracy, and interpersonal skills.
  • Kindergarten Readiness: Prepares children for a smooth transition to kindergarten by integrating preschool programs within elementary schools, promoting familiarity with school routines and expectations.
  • Opportunities for Younger Children: Provides preschool opportunities for children as young as 3, promoting early childhood development and giving them a head start for future learning.

Preschool classes begin at 3-years-old which gives children time to feel comfortable in a classroom. Our preschool classes take place in our elementary schools, helping young children learn the building and the staff before moving onto kindergarten.

Conscious Discipline

A positive way to support building social and emotional skills

The SSP Community Preschool classes encourage children to develop social and emotional skills including self-control/or self-regulation skills, problem solving, safety and respect for others. Teachers model appropriate behavior and guide positive interactions among children and adults. We use Conscious Discipline® strategies to nurture these skills. Consistent use of these strategies and instructional materials help support children as they grow into successful, lifelong learners.

When a problem arises, the teacher relies on modeling appropriate behavior, taking a breath and remaining calm, giving children vocabulary to use, supporting ways to calm bodies, teaching peacemaking skills, reinforcing positive behaviors, and making good decisions. Children learn to make appropriate choices and develop techniques for regaining self-control when they feel frustrated. Instructive and individually appropriate strategies and routines help to strengthen the child’s self-control and maintain self-esteem and the feeling of being part of our school family.
