AVID Program Overview
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) provides all students with fundamental skills to promote academic success, self-efficacy and self-advocacy as they begin their educational journey. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills.
Our teachers use AVID strategies to support and strengthen our implementation of the PYP and MYP, helping students acquire specific skills they need in order to learn. For example, students learn to stay organized with the help of their AVID binder and agenda. Students in the MYP are continuing to strengthen their organizational skills by continued use of the AVID binder and agenda; these organizational skills are imbedded within the MYP Approaches to Learning skill category of Self-Management and skill cluster of Organization.
In the MYP, students also continue to make their thinking visible by using two- and three-column notes; these note-taking skills are imbedded within the MYP Approaches to Learning skill category of Communication and skill cluster of Communication.
These strategies are a wonderful partner to our IB programming, and will help our students develop their executive functioning skills, organization and personal belief in success!
