A child is eligible for kindergarten if he or she will be 5 years old on or before September 1 of the year he or she will begin school. For information on early entrance to kindergarten, contact the school building office where you intend to enroll your child. State law requires all students to complete Early Childhood Screening before they enter kindergarten.
Student Transfers – What to do
Parents of elementary students moving to South St. Paul from another school district should enroll their child at the elementary school in the attendance area where they live. Contact the school office and make an appointment. Elementary schools conduct kindergarten enrollment times each spring for students who will attend kindergarten the following fall.
Parents of middle school and high school students moving to South St. Paul from another school district should contact the High School (grades 6-12) office to make an appointment with a school counselor who will assist their child in enrolling and registering for classes.
Minnesota Statute 124D.03 allows all Minnesota’s public school students the opportunity to apply to attend school outside of the school district where they live. Students must apply to the school district of their choice by January 15 for the following fall to receive the best chance of being admitted. Families generally provide their own school transportation. No tuition is charged. For transportation options in South St. Paul, see the 'Transportation' section of this website.
To ‘open enroll’ in a district other than the one where you reside, download and complete the Open Enrollment Options Form PDF.
